Invisible Real

Invisible Real is an audio-visual performance created by Faye MacCalman, with visuals by Rhian Cooke, that shines a light on mental illness and our hidden worlds through a dreamlike journey of anonymous personal experiences, otherworldly composition, improvisation and projection art. Invisible Real challenges the idea of mental illness being ‘taboo’ by presenting emotional worlds and sensitivity as fluid, and sometimes magical, landscapes that are an essential part of being human.
(TW: Suicide) It still feels taboo to talk honestly about mental illness experiences, and vital treatment is often underfunded and over subscribed. After my own experiences with mental illness and losing my close friend to suicide, I wanted to set this up as a place where people can see, hear and share their under the surface realities anonymously, contributing to a magical mirroring of our subconscious landscapes through music and visuals.
This work celebrates the transformative power of people sharing their true experiences, and provides a space for hidden mental worlds to be illuminated without shame.
This work was created as part of my artist residency at The Glasshouse ICM, and is supported by Jerwood Arts. This project was originally supported by the Cheltenham Jazz festival Jerwood jazz Encounters project. Thanks to The Glasshouse ICM, Jerwood Arts, Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Manchester Jazz Festival, Snape Maltings and Mental Health Matters for their support in making this happen!
